Class Journal
- Class 1- Introduction: 8.21@6pm
- Tracy, the instructor, is energetic and an excellent speaker. My class is very young, mostly just out of High School. Our first assignment is an intro speech, an event that influenced us. I will do a speech intertwining my decision to make movies and Rob Nilsson, possibly something on my age too.
- Class 2- First Speech: 8.23@7pm
- My intro speech went ok. My introduction with the gimmick went very well, but I lost my place for a moment towards the middle. This makes me wish that I recorded it, so I could see how I reacted in my scuffle for words. There is a balance that must be achieved between audience, efficiency, and presentation. To be direct, funny, and comfortable. I would like for my public speaking to be more thinking on my feet, more interaction… but more to this as time goes on.
- Class 3- Speech Schedules: 8.28@6pm
- Tracy passed out our schedule for Speeches, and the rest of the students wrapped up their introduction speeches. Afterwards, we did group work to figure out the class demographics. I will began breaking down my speech for the next class. I am thinking of either Mr. Willis’s the Doorway or Rob Nilsson’s 9@night series. More on this later.
- Class 4- The Date of My Next Speech: 8.30@6:00pm
- My Speech is now scheduled for 9/20. This gives me plenty of time to practice. I thought it would be funny to do a speech on hemorrhoids, but I am considering Mixed Martial Arts too. I was even thinking of going a bit further and doing Randy Couture. I have time to think it over. Tracy also gave us a great lecture about organization and targeting our audience.
- Class 5- Preparation Lecture & Surveys: 9.2@6:00pm
- Tracy lectured on Preparation, generating ideas, grouping those ideas into points, and formulating the points into a thesis. She also talked about connectivity in the speech, bridging and transitioning to different topics. My homework is to formulate my speech based on her lecture.
- Class 6- Info Speeches Day 1: 9.11@6:00pm
- We started the information speeches today. I really need to get my speech ready. I will prepare my speech tomorrow.
- Class 10- My Speech- The Doorway: 9.20@6:00pm
- My speech was on The Doorway. Last second, to raise the stakes, I invited Dr. Klaschus, director of the honors program, to my speech. I became very nervous as my speech progressed, and it was really strange for me, for I have spoken in front of thousands of people with no problem before, but this was years ago now. I think I may need to relearn this skill. I also scripted my speech. I am not huge on scripting my movies, so next time I will do my speech as I do my improvisational scenes. Next time, I will get in front of the class and just go. My next speech will be on Randy Couture.
- Class 11- Class Canceled: 9.20@6:00pm
- Speech class was canceled today. Tom, a student from class, informed me in the library.
- Class 12- Student Speeches: 9.20@5:30pm
- We continued student speeches today. I analyzed the students making comments on other students speeches, and, for the most part, I refrained from extensive feedback. I am looking forward to my next speech.
- Class 13- Our 2nd Speech Dates: 10.2@5:30pm
- We received our second speech dates today. My speech is on Tuesday 10.16. I am trying to decide between a speech on Randy Couture or the drawing I did in High School. Not sure yet, I will think about it.
- Class 14- Continued Lecture: 10.5@1:40pm
- Tracy continued her lecture on visual speeches.
- Class 15- 1st Round of Speeches: 10.9@8:20pm
- The First round of visual aid speeches was completed today. On the class video system, I tested out my computer to see if it will visually work, and it looks cool. So tomorrow, or tonight if time permits, I will test out the power point remote control. Also, tomorrow, I will draw up my outline.
- Class 17- My Visual Aid Speech 10.17@2:30pm
- Yesterday, I gave my visual aid speech, and everything went very well. I felt myself become myself on stage, or infront of the class. Tracy offered some great feedback on the length of the speech to, geared towards feedback. I felt like myself this time. I am looking forward to my next speech.
- Class 19- Homework Assignments 10.23@6pm
- Tracy mentioned, we have speech analysis as a written homework assignment. Maybe, I will do Rob Nilsson or one of the upcoming film festival events. Keep this note in mind. Next is the persuasive speech, and I am thinking of doing my speech on the environment.
- Class 21- Speech and Research 10.30@5:30pm
- My persuasion speech isn’t for several weeks, Thursday 11.15, and I will hand out my survery in class on Thursday. ¶ I also have the critique paper to do. ¶ This Thursday, Luke and I will be doing the special occasion speech. I will be presenting an award to Luke, and I will improvise it when I get there. Also, I need to find some chess pieces to make the trophy, this will be fun.
- Class 28- Monroe Speech 11.28@5:30pm
- I drew a number 1 for my Monroe persuasion speech. I will have to prepare my speech over the weekend. This is very little notice, but I will do my best to make it happen ¶ I also noticed that I do not have any logs for my last speech, the first persuasion speech. I’m not sure if I had a glitch in publishing or if I simply forgot to write about it. Well, that first persuasion speech went very well. The only issue was that I went way over time, but the enitre class really enjoyed my speech. ¶ Last, I figured that I will need at least a 40/50 on the final to get an A in the class.
- Class 32- Final Speech Complete 12.12@3:40pm
- OK, another gap in logging. I was caught up in my honors presentation last week (The Doorway Movie Project), so I didn’t have much time to make journal entries. ¶ I did my final speech on food last week. This speech was about how food effects people, i.e., if people eat healthy natural foods they will live a more happy and productive life. I was under a lot of pressure leading into the speech. I wanted to do good because my honors presentation was the coming Thursday. Fortunately everything went very well, and I was very happy with the speech. This gave me a lot of confidence going into my honors presentation. ¶ In the coming week I will write up my class summary.
