English 4: Flash Test
I finished my art history multiple choice flash project, and I wanted to do something for my english 4 class. So the purpose of this project is to create a simple interactive study application for my English-4 final.
Project Description
The objective of this project is to create a simple multiple choice simulation. The user will be presented with an literary piece, and their challenge is to choose the correct author of the piece. After the user clicks the submit button they will be take to result page for the answer. At the end of the test, the user will be given a score and grade for resulting from the total number of challenges.
Project Journal
- log 1 - First Entry: 10.29@8:18pm
- I did some searching online for an flash tutorials on flash cards, and I didn’t find any. I then searched on input and dynamic text fields for Flash, and I found Displaying Data in a Text Field on Kirupa.com. Today, I did the first series of steps for one card, and next I have to find a way to do multiple cards. I’m not yet sure if I will use data entry for the problems in Action Script or on the stage in flash, but I will figure this our once I develop the structure for the cards. I will also create a number that displays how many flashcards. Also, later I would like to make the flash cards graphically pleasing.
- log 2 - Change of Plans: 11.2@4pm
- I decided not to do a flash card quiz. I think a multiple choice quiz is better suited for this class. ¶ I also was inspired by a design tutorial at PSDtuts.com, Creating Old Collage Effect. PSDtuts provides a great series of tutorials, and I highly recommend them. ¶ I decided to, more or less, copy their concept for this exercise, even taking some of the same photos from istockphoto.com. So far the layout is looking great. ¶ I never thought of using vintage style photos from iStock to design, and I am extremely excited about starting future projects using this technique. ¶ Today, I started creating the graphic button components in Photoshop, and I will import and implement them into the flash application soon. After I am satisfied with the functions, I will enter in the questions and answers, the quiz content.
- log 3 - Tweening Dynamic Text: 11.13@2pm
- I was trying to figure out how to work with tweening dynamic data. At the end of the movie, dynamic data fields breaking down the test scores were planned to scroll with the pop up paper. I was able to get the animated text fields to work, but as soon as I put the text in a movie, the dynamic data was not displaying. Later I found an article in a forum on the subject, Animating Dynamic Text, and this served as a solution to my problem.
- log 4 - Targeting a Movie: 11.14@10pm
- I learned more about targeting a movie, i.e., if you are passing data from a movie nested in another movie you would need to use either “_root” or “_parent.” ¶ I would like to figure out how to do a call on action script that is duplicated in frames, one way is to create a variable on a single frame. Another is to to a call on the script, from an outside text file. I tried working with the script in another layer, but there seemed to be issues with the movie when playing back. I will have to do trial an error with different options.
- log 5 - First Print: 11.15@5pm
- I printed the test and posted it on my English 4 page, Eng-4 Flash Test. There are still some things I would like to optimize, i.e., setting it up so that the script per problem is less repetitive. This should be possible by using script includes. I would also like to develop a way to randomly go through each problem so that each time the test is taken the problems display in a new, random, order. I will try some of these additional things in future project. For now, I will put this one to sleep.
